WOBBE INDEX AND CALORIFIC VALUE

Today Off-gases generated in industrial processes often serve as cheap alternatives to fossil fuels. Off-gases have been burnt in the past often by open flares, wasting the valuable energy content.

The composition of Off-gases from industrial processes is subject to large fluctuations due to the generation of the gases. Therefore the continous determination of the Wobbe-Index and the Air demand of the Off-gases are essential to adopt the burner to the ever changing gas quality. The safe and complete combustion of the Off-gases is a must to achieve economic combustion efficiency and minimization of the flue gas emissions.

The measuring method of the RHADOX Analysers for the determination of the Wobbe-Index and the Air demand of industrial Off-gases is based on the measurement of the air required for complete oxidation. A sample of the Off-gas is levelled to the same temperature and pressure and homogeneously mixed. The gas and air mixture is then oxidised in a catalytic reactor during which the residual oxygen content is measured. By computing the result of the oxygen measurement with the calibration parameter the RHADOX Analyser determines Wobbe-Index and Air demand for the specific Off-gas. Wobbe-Index and Air demand are required for reliable combustion control in industrial burners.
